Current - BOOK LAUNCH – TOWARD THE NOT-YET: ART AS PUBLIC PRACTICE

Kunstverein Wagenhalle, Sep 2021

Gathering with Jeanne van Heeswijk, Rachael Rakes
19:30 — 21:00

A conversation and gathering with artist Jeanne van Heeswijk and curator Rachael Rakes (curator of public practice at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht) on the occasion of their publication Toward the Not-Yet: Art as Public Practice (edited by Jeanne van Heeswijk , Maria Hlavajova, and Rachael Rakes).

Releasing in October 2021 from BAK, basis voor actuele kunst (Utrecht) and MIT Press (Cambridge, MA and London, England), Toward the Not-Yet: Art as Public Practice (edited by Jeanne van Heeswijk, Maria Hlavajova, and Rachael Rakes) combines handbook, dictionary, and anthology to investigate artistic practice aimed at achieving social change. With text and visual essays, definitions, exercises, interviews, and images, the contributors envision a praxis that is committed to experimenting with aesthetics and politics. Catalyzed by the work of artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, which focuses on radicalizing civic processes, Toward the Not-Yet: Art as Public Practice imagines and enacts alternative ways conceiving the present and future.

For the launch at the symposium, ART AND URBAN SPACE – in assembly, van Heeswijk and Rakes discuss the genesis of and ideas behind the book, as well as its practical and theoretical groundings, followed by a reception and the possibility to purchase the publication.
